COVID Vaccination for Travel: What to Check Before You Fly

  • COVID Vaccination for Travel: What to Check Before You Fly

Most destinations no longer require proof of COVID vaccination to enter, but it is still worth checking before you fly, as rules can vary by country and change at short notice. Below, we look at current COVID entry requirements, who can get a free NHS COVID vaccination, and why a booster is still worth considering before travel.

Do You Need a COVID Vaccine to Travel Abroad?

For most destinations, no. Routine COVID entry requirements have been dropped by the vast majority of countries, so most travellers can board without showing any proof of covid vaccination. That said, health rules abroad are not fixed; they can change. Individual countries can reintroduce testing, vaccination proof, or quarantine measures at short notice during local outbreaks or new variant waves, so it is better to check than make assumptions.

How to Check COVID Entry Requirements for Your Destination

Each country sets its own entry requirements, and these can change with little warning. The foreign travel advice pages list entry requirements for every destination, and checking them before you book, and again shortly before departure, is the safest approach.

Countries and Operators That May Still Have Rules

A small number of destinations may still request COVID-19 testing or proof of vaccination, particularly during local outbreaks. Some cruise lines and tour operators also have their own health policies. These can apply even when the destination itself has no COVID entry requirement, so check your booking terms as well as the government advice for your destination.

Who Is Eligible for a Free NHS COVID Vaccination?

Free NHS COVID vaccination is now limited to people most at risk of serious illness rather than the general adult population. This is different from earlier stages of the vaccination programme, when eligibility was much wider. If you qualified in previous years, it is worth checking the current criteria rather than assuming you are still eligible.

NHS COVID Booster Eligibility for Autumn/Winter 2026/27

According to NHS guidance, the autumn 2026 programme, based on JCVI advice, covers:

  • Adults aged 75 and over
  • Residents in care homes for older adults
  • Anyone aged 6 months and over who is immunosuppressed

If you do not fall into one of these groups, a free NHS covid vaccination is not currently available, though a private travel COVID vaccination may be an option worth asking about.

Why It's Worth Considering a COVID Jab Before You Fly, Even If It's Not Required

Even without entry rules, travel still increases your exposure to COVID-19. Airports, planes and hotels bring large numbers of people into close contact for extended periods, which raises the chance of picking up a respiratory infection while away. Falling ill abroad can also be more difficult to manage, particularly if you are far from familiar healthcare or your travel insurance depends on being well enough to fly home as planned.

Benefits of Getting Vaccinated Before Travel

A COVID jab before flying can reduce the risk of illness disrupting your trip and may also protect people travelling with you, whether you receive it free through the NHS or arrange it privately before travelling.

  • Lower risk of severe illness while away from home and familiar healthcare.
  • Less disruption to your trip, with less chance of illness affecting plans or activities.
  • Protection for travelling companions, including older relatives or those with health conditions.
  • Peace of mind, particularly on long-haul or multi-stop journeys.

How Oakwood Pharmacy Can Help You Prepare for Travel

Oakwood Pharmacy in Woodhouse Eaves can check your NHS COVID vaccination eligibility and discuss your options before you fly, alongside advice on other travel vaccines you may need. Our pharmacists can also point you towards trusted sources for your destination’s specific entry requirements, so you know what to check before departure.

What to Expect at Your Appointment

The appointment itself is usually quick. A pharmacist will ask a few questions about your health before giving the jab and advise on possible mild side effects, such as a sore arm. Most people are in and out within ten minutes.

Get Your Travel Health Sorted Before You Fly

Do not leave your travel health until the last minute. Book a consultation at Oakwood Pharmacy to check your COVID jab options before flying, alongside any other travel vaccines your trip may call for. We support travellers across Woodhouse Eaves, Loughborough, Quorn, Mountsorrel, Coalville, Barrow upon Soar and Woodhouse.

A little preparation now can give you greater peace of mind and help you focus on enjoying your trip.
